Consent

In order to have consent, there needs to be a clear agreement that both parties want to engage in the act. What could this look like?

Consent between two or more people needs to be clearly communicated. This means, if able, a verbal ‘yes’. If unable, a clear and agreed upon sign or signal needs to be acknowledged meaning, ‘yes’.

Consent CAN NOT happen if one of the parties involved is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, unconscious, coerced, or threatened.

Consent can look or sound like:

  • “Yes!”

  • “I like that.”

  • “Can I touch you there?”

  • “Are you comfortable with this?”

  • Checking in over the course of the sexual act

  • Nodding

Not having consent can look or sound like:

  • “I don’t know…”

  • “If you want...”

  • “No.”

  • The person looks unsure or uncomfortable

  • The person is unenthusiastic

  • The person is under the influence of drugs/alcohol

Still unsure of what consent looks like? Watch the video below which illustrates consent by using a cup of tea!
