S.A.R.T. - Sexual Assault Response Team
(A sub-committee of the Domestic Violence Task force)

SART is a multi-disciplinary team in Addison County whose purpose is to coordinate medical, advocacy and criminal justice services for sexual assault survivors in a professional, compassionate and timely manner and promote education about sexual violence through community outreach and training.

Team members include representatives from:WomenSafe, Social Rehabilitative Services, Middlebury College, Area High Schools, the State’s Attorney’s Office, Victim Advocate, Porter Medical Center and State and Local Police Departments.

The State’s Attorney’s Office
If the sexual assault is reported to the police, the crime is investigated and the State’s Attorney decides if charges should be brought. If you have any questions about the criminal justice process, call the State’s Attorney or Victim’s Advocate in the State’s Attorney’s Office.

The Victim Assistance Program
The Victim Assistance Program was created to assist crime victims with the problems that occur as a result of a crime. A Victim Advocate is available in the State’s Attorney’s Office who can provide the following:

  • Information about the victim’s role in the criminal justice process
  • Information on case status and court dates
  • Support in court during depositions and trial testimony
  • Assistance with obtaining restitution
  • Information on the availability of protection
  • Short-term counseling and support
  • Referral to other community services


The Victim’s Compensation Program
The Victims Compensation Program provides limited financial assistance to victims of crime who have experienced an un-reimbursed financial loss as a result of a crime. Eligibility requirements include:

  • The crime must be reported to a law enforcement agency.
  • The victim suffered physical injury or emotional harm as a result of the crime.
  • The crime occurred in Vermont or against a Vermont resident in a state or country without a Compensation Program.


Money is available for the following expenses not paid by other sources:

  • Medical care
  • Counseling for victims and family members
  • Funeral expenses
  • Lost wages
  • Other expenses (Prescriptions, transportation to medical appointments etc.)


Womensafe's Sexual Violence Services

  • Womensafe’s advocates provide emotional support and advocacy for surviviors, their families and those who care about them. WOMENSAFE can provide information and referrals regarding emotional, medical and legal issues surrounding sexual violence.
  • Womensafe advocates are available 24 hours a day to provide in-person support during medical, police and legal procedures associated with an assault.
  • All services at Womensafe are confidential.


Porter Hospital

  • Emergency Physicians and certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners are available at Porter Hospital 24 hours a day to provide services to victims of sexual assault.
  • Services will include treatment of injuries and the collection of forensic evidence. If the victim chooses to report the assault to the police, the test results will be made available for that investigation.
  • Referrals to community services, counseling and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancy prevention will be offered.

Law Enforcement
The role of police is to thoroughly investigate all sexual assaults that are reported to them and collect evidence that will lead to the successful apprehension and conviction of the perpetrator, while at the same time being sensitive to the victim’s needs.
